Primary/Secondary Transfer

It is in the interest of all pupils to ensure that the transfer from primary to secondary is as smooth as possible. At Doon Academy we maintain very close links with our associated Primary schools, aimed at securing continuity in the education of all our pupils.  During Primary 7, pupils visit the school each Tuesday afternoon for 28 weeks to get to know the staff, to become familiar with their new surroundings and to study a common curriculum.  When the pupils, therefore, arrive at the school in S1 they are already well known by the staff.  The pupil records transferred from the primary schools to Doon Academy give us an excellent working knowledge of each pupil.  As a result of this close co-operation, very few children have difficulties in settling into the school and the majority of pupils enjoy their new experiences.

The visits on Tuesday afternoons allow time for secondary and primary staff to meet regularly to discuss the curriculum in both primary and secondary school and to devise means by which the schools can help each other and the pupils.  Through the funding of our FLaT project we now have primary teachers teaching Maths to some S1/2 classes in Doon Academy and the Maths specialists are able to work with classes in the Primary schools.  This close working is having a positive effect on pupils’ attainment.  

Doon Academy and the associated Primary schools have already agreed on common policies for the teaching of the more important aspects of each subject in both primary and secondary school.  These links will continue in the future for the benefit of pupils at this important stage in their education.
