WHAT DO GUIDANCE TEACHERS DO?

  • Follow the progress of the pupils in their house group from the time they arrive in Doon Academy until the time they leave. This means that they get to know the pupils in their charge very well indeed!
  • Provide guidance and support to ensure that each child's personal, curricular and vocational welfare needs are met.
  • Establish and maintain good links with each pupil and the respective parents or carers.
  • Are there to help in case of difficulty.
  • Can be consulted by parents during normal school hours or at Parents' Nights.
  • Iinterview each pupil at least once per term.
  • Monitor attendance to ensure that progress is not hindered by problems in this area.
  • Liase with external agencies: Child Guidance Service, Social Work Department, Careers Service, Health Visitors.
  • Offer advice on matters related to leaving school.
  • Prepare Social Education programmes. Each pupil has one period per week of Personal and Social Education.
  • Prepare pupils to make appropriate option choices at the end of S2 and at the end of S4.
  • Write references for employers, colleges, universities.
  • Deliver the Work Experience Programme.
